When should I call hospice?
It is always best to have information before the need becomes critical. This gives you time to discuss your wishes and become familiar with the Hospice Team. A person can be admitted to hospice when the prognosis is 6 months or less and curative treatment is exchanged for comfort treatment. However, care is not limited to 6 months. As long as a person requires hospice, s/he continues to receive care.
How does a referral work?
Anyone can make a referral: Friends, family, clergy, doctors, nurses, neighbors. All you have to do is call. We will ask a few questions and contact the attending doctor. A Team member will visit the patient for a free evaluation within 24 hours. If appropriate, then s/he can be admitted the same day.
How long does hospice last?
Hospice care lasts as long as needed. Services can begin any time after a Medical Doctor certifies that life expectancy is 6 months or less. Hospice benefits do not "expire." We constantly monitor our clients for the most appropriate treatment plan. Clients can also return to hospice at any time, as needed.
Where can you receive hospice treatment?
Life Source Hospice serves our clients wherever they reside. Whether you live in your home, a nursing home, assisted living facility or hospital, we will be there for you. Part of comfort care includes reducing visits to the hospital as much as possible.
What about insurance/billing?
Hospice is a Medicare benefit, 100% covered. Most other insurance companies also provide for hospice care, with minimal co-pay. No one is ever denied services for financial reasons. We will take care of all billing related to the Hospice Plan of Care for you.
